What to Watch this Halloween

October 29th, 2009by Jett Loe · Comments

Halloween’s soon upon us Dear Listeners, so it is incumbent upon me to make recommendations for that most scary and spooktacular of nights!

First off – let’s say you’re staying in and can’t be bothered with all the boisterous bewitching out there.  Then you have no choice but to turn off the lights and watch ‘A Cold Night’s Death’ – handily available on YouTube above.  For more information on this most chilling of chronicles click on the link below:

If the thought of staying indoors is what disturbs and deranges you then venture out you must into a dark theatre and see:

Yes, it’s ‘Scream Blacula Scream’Friday and Saturday night, 11:30pm at the Belcourt Theatre Nashville.

What’s that you say, you won’t be near Nashville this All Hallow’s Eve?  Well then I pity you as we could have sat together in the Belcourt’s rickety and ramshackle seats and enjoyed that most theatrical of thespians: William Marshall.

Truly though if you can not be manifest in melodious Music City for ‘Scream Blacula Scream’ then Gareth and I will have a righteous recommendation for you on this Friday’s podcast – listen in Dear Listener.

If you dare.

A fun batch of Halloween recommendations, but ... if you’re feeling old school and live in the D.C. Metro area, I would recommend a full-fledged theatrical viewing of the original 1922 NOSFERATU, courtesy of the AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Springs, MD. This Friday night, the AFI Silver will host two showings of Murnau's masterpiece, with live musical accompaniment provided by the ensemble Silent Orchestra (keyboardist Carlos Garza and percussionist Rich O'Meara).

The invaluable AFI Silver started this a few years ago, and now it’s an annual Halloween event. The tickets are rather pricey ($20), but the experience of seeing a good print of NOSFERATU on the big screen with a live ensemble is truly extraordinary. Highly recommended.

  • Ahhh...NOSFERATU - who says copyright infringement is all bad! ;)
