Loved your descriptions of Monsoon Wedding. I really look forward to seeing this movie again. Gareth, I wanted to recommend a movie to you that I saw a few nights ago called "Five Minutes of Heaven". I am sure you have heard of it or seen it, but just in case... It's a fictional account of a real -life attempt at reconciliation in contemporary Northern Ireland. Really strong performances and a very interesting meditation on the effects of violence.

Gareth: midnight screenings of THE ROOM (this should be lots of fun) - Sat-Sun noon screenings of JAWS - BIG FAN, IT MIGHT GET LOUD and BRIGHT STAR - that Paris TX dvd should be a winner too, and yes, my addiction is a sorry one. Even picked up THE HUMAN CONDITION despite the fact that I may never watch the whole thing again. That packaging is too alluring.

Ah, Toby - I should have expected your Criterion addiction to be deeper than mine. I should have noted that I'll keep box sets and single film editions separate in my review of the year...I'm in Nashville from Thursday night til Monday - what delights await me at the Belcourt?

I don't know Gareth. Even though this is probably 70% rehash, the Kurosawa 100 box set looks like a keeper: http://www.criterion.com/boxsets/678
