Valkyrie Online

January 10th, 2009by Jett Loe · View Comments

The first six minute so Valkyrie on legally available on online, (you can see it in higher def here).  I really like this idea of promotion – it’s the old Doom model = give away the first level for free, and if you like it pay for rest of the game/movie, etc.  Plus, it’s not like the standard trailer that gives away the whole damn movie.

As to Valkyrie itself – it doesn’t look promising – as I get older I’m beginning to find obscene the idea of war as entertainment – this kind of polished, middle-brow, we’re not gonna show you anything about the human condition really, entertainment. This isn’t Superman Returns – there is no Superman – Hitler got away with it.

Its not a war film - I agree that Saving Private Ryan is basically military voyeurism - this is a salute to the courage and sacrifice of same evry barve and honourable men who risked everything to remove Hitler. For most of them this was a moral decision - to become traitors to their own country in time of war to remove an arch criminal, while putting thier wives, children and friends at extreme risk. I can think of very few actions braver than that. These people have been largely ignored for 60 years, especially in North America. Valkyrie is not a war movie....it is a movie that is set during the war. Its also factually accurate save some minor compresion of characters and events. The first 6 minutes have the only battle secene in the film. I suggest you give it a chance and avoid the anti-Cruise propaganda of the last 2 years.
  • Cheers for the thoughts Colin - I'll go see the film -

+ am not anti-Cruise - the whole rise and fall rise and fall media thing is designed as they would say in the old days 'to sell papers' - what i've always liked about Cruise is that he's 'working' for the audience - you can see him put the effort in - now of course this doesn't always work if it's not right for the character - but for playing driven high-achievers it's perfect -
