I’ve never liked Ben Kingsley. In the movies I mean. He’s always comes across as precious, self-important, condescending – in short, for him, acting in your movie is slumming.
Now, with this in mind, the trick to working with the Kingsley is to cast him in a role that utilises his disdain for being in the motion pictures. Which brings me to Transsiberian.
I don’t know if the ‘Long Tail’ thing is bogus or not. But I’ve become a fan of Netflix’s Watch Instantly. Which means I’ll watch a flick that not only wouldn’t I take the time to see in the cinema, but I’ll watch a movie that I couldn’t even be bothered to Netlix proper, (i.e. getting it in the post).
I saw that Transsiberian was a ‘local favorite’ of Nashvillians and so hit the play button. Was pleasantly surprised to find an enjoyable, fun little thriller, (even though it’s shot like an episode of ER = overly graded, too close-up and cutty).
It’s got some nice surprises, beautiful scenery, and exotic locales and extras. Check it out if you get the chance.
And Ben Kinglsey plays a guy who thinks he’s to good for his job – which works out just fine for the movie.
