A Simple Post on ‘Milk’

Sean Penn for City Supervisor

Gareth here: I just saw ‘Milk’ at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco.  I’m not going to review it now – Jett and I will do that in an upcoming episode of TFT.  For now, I want to say that the experience of seeing this film on the very street where much of it was filmed; yards from where Harvey Milk ran his campaign office; and in the company of an audience that surely included people who witnessed and participated in the events the movie portrays, was one of the most moving cinematic encounters I’ve had.  And a question arises: how does the context in which we a movie is seen affect the viewer’s response?

  • Woah Gareth, I was going to go to this movie at the Castro this very night, but I had to reschedule because one of my friends forgot about dinner plans. We'll instead see it tomorrow at the Sundance Kabuki, but hold up - you're in San Francisco right now? Want to grab a coffee?
  • I keep banging on about this. Context context context - especially in regards to our upcoming review of Australia.
